HOW TO GET FREE TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE: The basics of search engine optimization

So, you have a website or a blog? Congratulations! That means you have taken the first step to present yourself / your company to the world through the internet.  This opens a whole new range of opportunities to increase your sales and even dominate your niche.

But, and this is an important BUT, a website alone won't bring a comany targeted traffic and massive amount of customers. In the offline world businesses need to promote themselves through advertising and other marketing techniques to get the attention of their target audience. It isn't any different in the case of online businesses. Websites need promotion., too.

There are several ways to get traffic to a website:
- contextual advertising, like Google AdWords
- banner advertising
- link exchange
- viral marketing
- search engine optimization
- etc.

Free traffic through search engines:

The cheapest traffic is the one that comes through search engines. Because it's absolutely free! Search engines, like Google, Yahoo or MSN Search are the first place where people go when they want to find information on any given topic. They type in the words that they want to find out about and get a huge list of websites.

For example, let's say your company organizes travels for singles to Spain. If your target audience enters the words "travels for singles Spain" (without quotation marks) to Google, right now it returns 1,290,000 results. As a company your goal is to have your website on the top of that list, because most people tend to click only the first few results. But how do you achieve it? How do you compete with the other 1,289,999 websites? The solution is offered by search engine optimization

The basics of search engine optimization - how does it help you to get traffic?

A website's position in search engines is based on difficult algorythms, mostly related to keywords,  and on the number of inbound links.

- Inbound link:  when an external page has a link on it that points to your website. In simple words, when other websites link to your site.

- Keywords: words or whole phrases that are entered into search engines and looked for.

The basis of search engine optimization is KEYWORDS! Finding the right keywords can make or break a company's (or individual website's) online success.

1. The problem of choosing the right keywoords:

When choosing the right keywords webmasters face the following dilemma: they either pick too general keywords that are searched by many potential visitors, but are also used by competing websites. Or they pick less commonly used keywords and phrases but in this case the number of visitors who search for these terms is also much smaller.

The ideal situation is when a webmaster finds keywords that are searched for by a lot of people and only a limited number of competing websites use them, too. It's not an easy task, but luckily there are a couple of services and softwares that can help you in this quest.

2. Optimizing a website for search enginges:

Once you have found the perfect keywords, it's time to optimize your website's individual pages for the search engines. This proccess is about putting the keywords into the appropriate places within the page.

Where to put keywords:
1. META tags: - description meta tag
                           - keywords meta tag
                           - title meta tag
2. Headers
3. ALT attributes (e.g. to images on the page)
4. Keyword rich content: in the text that appears on the page
5. Anchor text (links)

It can be done with most website editors, like Dreamweaver, Front Page, Netscape Composer, or any HTML editor, like Notepad and Notetab Light.

3. Getting external links:

After the optimization of the single pages is finished, comes the hard part: making other website owners link to your website. Finding partners with whom you can exchange links is not an easy process, and if you do it manually it can be quite time consuming. Some smart internet marketers have realized this problem and created a couple of useful softwares to take the burden off of webmasters and save money and time for them.
