Different ways for monetizing a website or blog
Websites and blogs can be used for generating income. As there are
several ways for making money with websites, you can multiply your
income potentials by incorporating different monetizing methods ad the
same time.
Income sources on a blog or website
1. PPC advertising:
Display pay-per-click ads on your website or blog and get paid after
each click. A few PPC ad networks:
Google
AdSense
Yahoo
Publishing Network
Chitika
2. CPM ads:
CPM means cost per mille = cost per thousand, and means the cost of
advertising for 1,000 page views or impressions. When you display a
banner ad with $1 CPM it means you get paid $1 for every 1,000 page
views. A website that has 250,000 page views per month can earn $250
with this banner. A few CPM advertising networks:
Casale
Media
Burst Media
Value Click
Media
3. Text ads:
You can sell text link ads on your website either directly or through a
text link advertising network - like Text Link Ads.
There
are other companies, as well, who specialize in selling text links.
4. Affiliate programs:
Affiliate programs – also called associate programs – are a partnership
between a merchant and a webmaster. You as a webmaster or blogger
become an affiliate of the merchant by displaying the merchant's banner
/ link on your website or blog. When a visitor purchases a product on
the merchant's website through this special link, you are entitled to a
commission. This commission can vary from as low as 1 -2 % to 75% or
higher based on the value of the purchase. In some cases affiliates are
paid a fix amount as a commission instead of a percentage. Popular
affiliate networks:
Commission
Junction
ShareAsale:
Clickbank
5. CPA programs / PPL
programs:
CPA (cost per action) programs are a type of affiliate programs where
webmasters are rewarded with money if they persuade their visitors to
take some action. It usually means to sign up for something, register
at a vendor's site, request a free quote, subscribe to a newsletter,
etc. These programs are also called PPL (pay-per-lead) as it is about
generating leads. Both the above mentioned Commission Junction and
ShareAsale run PPL programs. Check out bigger, established affiliate
networks to locate more CPA / PPL programs.
6. Direct banner ads:
Direct banner advertising is one of the oldest income source for
webmasters. When you have a website / blog with high traffic and your
visitors might be valuable to vendors in your niche, you should offer
advertising space on your site to potential advertisers directly. You
could announce it in your newsletter – if you run one – or draw
attention to this option on your own website. Other sources for
attracting potential advertisers are forums, or even eBay.
7. Paid reviews /
sponsored reviews:
This method allows you to write product reviews on your blog or website
and get paid for it. You can either do it by joining a sponsored
reviews marketplace, or offer sponsored reviews directly. A few
marketplaces for bloggers to check out:
PayPerPost
Sponsored
Reviews
Review Me
8. Paid content:
Create premium content on your website and let visitors access it for a
payment. You could charge a one time fee or a periodical subscription
fee. The paid content might be tools, guides, exclusive material,
direct coaching or consulting, but could also be something as simple as
a private forum.
9. RSS ads:
Blogs offer the opportunity to generate an RSS feed to the website
content. RSS feeds are a new channel for displaying advertisements. You
can use Google AdSense as it lets publishers run ads in their RSS feeds
to widen income generating options. But you can also sell ad space on
your feed directly.
10. Sponsored sections:
Sponsorship works fine in the offline media and many advertisers apply
this promotional tool online, as well. You can let advertisers sponsor
a column, article series, or a special section on your website. Events
are also a good excuse for recruiting sponsors: running a competition,
poll or a survey are ideal events for sponsorships. When you have a
brainstorm session for article ideas you can even design an article
series with potential sponsors in mind.
11. Promoting and selling
your own products:
This is ideal for crafters and artists. You can use your blog for
promoting your own crafts. Write a nice post about your latest crafts
and illustrate it with appetizing pictures taken about the items. Then
direct your readers to your Ebay page, Etsy page, your own online
store, or to the web page of a brick and mortar store where your crafts
can be purchased.
12. Promoting your
services:
If your hobby is not related to creating physical products, you can
still offer your expertise about your field of interest in the form of
consulting. Are you a passionate gardener? Many busy people with even a
small garden would hire someone who would take a look at their plants
now and then and ensure that everything grows they way they should. Is
your hobby related to dancing or music? Why not give private lessons?
Use your blog to establish yourself as an expert in the field and
charge money for your consulting, tutoring, special services.
There are a number of other income sources you can incorporate into a
website or blog. The above are just a quick taste of what you can do
with a website when it comes to generating money.
